Essentials of computing I
Fall 2014

Date

Material Covered
1st Day

General material you should know:

Date to purchase LyndaClassroom access: Sept 1-6 ONLY
LyndaClassroom access will begin after: Sept 7, 2014

You will need to purchase the LyndaClassroom access from the Edinboro bookstore between the dates indicated above. This is the only place you can purchase the bundle which is priced for use in this college course.  This access will not show up in the bookstores on-line site - you will need to call or go to the bookstore between the dates indicated above.

If you prefer you can actually enroll in Lynda.com for a monthly fee ($37/mo) and get all of the Lynda courses (and there are MANY) that are available. After the end purchase date indicated above you will have to purchase your access through Lynda.com for $37/mo.

Different Plans

LyndaClassroom is a bundle of five video courses provided at a reduced rate.  Each course has exercise files that should be downloaded and unzipped on your computer.  You will need to find the technique that works for you in learning the material.  Best practices would be to view a portion of a course and then use the application to walk through the skills with the exercise files.

I strongly recommend you purchase a copy of the reference book:

Title: Office 2013 In Depth

Author: Joe Habraken

This book is to be used as a reference book to look up various skills as you work through the application.  We will not be "working through" this book. The hope is that you will find it useful enough to keep it when the course is complete.

Best practices would be for you to "mark" various topics that you find difficult to remember.  There are special tab sticky notes you can purchase to mark these pages (I find they work great, certainly better than just dog-earring the page).  You will find this very helpful for exams and as you complete some of the items for the portfolio.

You will need a copy or access to a copy of MS Office 2013 or Office 365.  Office is available on all Edinboro Computer labs.
Office 365 Looks like any day now you will be able to use this for free (included in tech fee).  Look for an install button on your e-mail page.  I think you'll have 5 installs.  So choose wisely on where you install it.

  • On the root of your flash drive or "S" dirve make a folder for this semester (i.e. Fall 2014).  Then make a seperate folder for each course you are currently taking.
    • Within the folder for this class, make folders for each sub-topic:

      • MS Word
      • MS Power Point
      • MS Excel
      • Web page

  • Eventually you will put the homework file you will make for this assignment and the PC purchase assignment in the concepts homework folder.
  • Do a print screen of your directory structure showing the folders, paste it into MS Word, print and turn in .
  • Due: September 13th

Assignment 2. You have $750 to buy a laptop, go to www.HP.com and customize a laptop for this price or less. Using MS Word give a short reason why you chose the processor, RAM size, Hard-drive size and if you got a CD Burner or not and any other special options.
Print the listing from the web site and attach the word document to it.
