I strongly recommend you purchase a copy of the reference book:

Title: Office 2013 In Depth

Author: Joe Habraken

This book is to be used as a reference book to look up various skills as you work through the application.  We will not be "working through" this book. The hope is that you will find it useful enough to keep it when the course is complete.

Best practices would be for you to "mark" various topics that you find difficult to remember.  There are special tab sticky notes you can purchase to mark these pages (I find they work great, certainly better than just dog-earring the page).  You will find this very helpful for exams and as you complete some of the items for the portfolio.

You will need a copy or access to a copy of MS Office 2013 or Office 365 or Office 2011/2016 for MAC.  Office is available on all Edinboro Computer labs.

Edinboro University provides students with a copy of Office 365 and the desktop version (Office 2013).  This can be downloaded and installed on your computer for use in this course.  The link Technology Resources - student information is

Office 365 Advantage

Office 365

Office 365 is a subscription service.  Office 2011/2013 is the desktop software that you can purchase for your computer and have forever.  Your subscription to Office 365 is already provided by Edinboro University so you do not need to purchase Office 2011/2013.  To read more about Office 365 vs Office 2011/2013:

Computer Concepts

Assignment 1:Using Windows Explorer - show me a good directory structure of your flash drive for this semester.  This will include directories for each course, topics, and assignments.

  • On the root of your flash drive or "S" drive make a folder for this semester (i.e.Spring 2016).  Then make a separate folder for each course you are currently taking.
    • Within the folder for this class (CSCI 104 - Essentials of Computing I), make folders for each sub-topic:
      • Concepts Homework
      • MS Word
      • MS Power Point
      • MS Excel
      • Portfolio Report
    • In the MS Word Directory make folders for:
      • Job Document
      • Resume
      • Cover Letter
      • Computer System

Watch this Video on how to use Windows Explorer, getting started with this project

  • Eventually you will put the homework file you will make for this assignment and the PC purchase assignment in the concepts homework folder that you made for this assignment.
  • Do a print screen of your directory structure showing the folders, paste it into MS Word, and turn in to the D2L drop box. .
  • Read through the this Power-point on Good Passwords and Email
  • Due:1/28

Assignment 2: Knowing how to purchase a PC.

Watch the following video to get some background info on what your needs are:

You have $750 to buy a laptop, go to www.HP.com and customize a laptop for this price or less. Using MS Word give a short reason why you chose the processor, RAM size, Hard-drive size and if you got a CD Burner or not and any other special options.

Screen print the listing from the web site and attach the word document to it. Put it in the D2L drop box
